Update on Mika

Thank you to all who were hoping that Mika pee-ed soon because this morning when we took him out, I swear, it lasted for at least 30 seconds! Your prayers worked!

His x-rays today showed that one leg is fine but the other dislocated leg cannot be fitted back into its socket.
This diagram on the left shows a normal hip where the ball is in the socket.
This is what Mika's hip looks like now

The vet hasn't been able to push the ball back into the socket.
One option is to get a second opinion and maybe try another vet to stick it in.
Another option is to remove the ball so that both bones are not connected.

However, he will still be limping.

The good news is that he can come home tomorrow!

He's such a tough boy and because we have to take him out to do his business, many cars have passed by him and he hasn't given them a second thought, which means that he isn't terrified of cars, considering he was hit by one... Which is great news.

What a little trooper! That x-ray is really scary. I hope that you can find a solution. Great news that he is home and motoring about and pee'ing!

As long as there's no pain involved a limp doesn't have to be a big deal to a doggy. We adjust to that so well with a little help from our humans. At least it wasn't worse. It could have been SO much worse and it wasn't and that's something to be very grateful for.

lotsa licks, Lola

I'm so glad Mika peed. That is great news.

I'm sure you will feel better when he is home, and you can give him lots of extra lovin'.

Will continue to send healing and strength while Mika recovers.

Glad Mika is doing well.
I'm sure you'll come to the right decision.
Don't be afraid of the femoral head removal (I know it sounds scary). It's done for lots of dysplastic dogs who recover amazingly well. The muscles in the leg are able to compensate with ease, especially in smaller dogs.

Wow! That x-ray is scary. I'm really glad to hear that Mika will be able to come home though. It's always so hard to decide what to do, but I'm sure you'll figure it out and do whatever you can to make sure that Mika is most comfortable.

Waaaaah Mika! We are so sorry that we were not able to find out about this sooner.
It is a good thing that Mika is alright and able to pee already. We have our paws crossed especially Fudgie who sort of is Mika's look-alike that Mika will have a fast recovery.

Hang in there dear Mika!

Oh my, that doesn't look comfortable. If you want another vet to try a reduction, I'd suggest getting Mika in very soon. Dislocations often become harder to reduce successfully over time. (Muscles tense, scar tissue is already being laid down, etc).

Mika is one tough boy. I'm glad he gets to come home!

Oh my gosh that looks so painful. If you do have to do the FHO, I did rehab Cherry, her picture is on my page, a border collie that had an FHO at 7 mnths old but then was never rehabbed. Even a year later when I did her rehab she ended up even able to do agility after she had that femoral head removal, if you do good rehab and go to like a rehab physical therapist you really end up with a dog that looks marvelous and can do about anything. Another friend had an FHO on her five year old border collie for severe hip dysplasia and he looks better then he has ever looked. Hopefully they can get it back in place with out the surgery, but if they do have to do it, having had experience with two dogs with the same surgery, as long as you really work afterwards to get them back, they do suprisingly good. Now Cherry origionally had nothing done and when I said I would take her and rehab her because I felt so sorry for her she was just hopping on three legs and did not use the leg at all, but with a few months of work she started doing agility with me. ;-),We are going to keep our positive thoughts and hope that it all gets popped back into place ....

It's great news that he was able to go potty!

Yeeouch! That x-ray looks painful! I'd be tempted to get a second and even third opinion for him! Poor guy!

Glad to hear that Mika is doing better, we'll continue to send good thoughts his (and your) way! I know you will do the best thing possible to help him.

Dogs are amazing in what they can adapt to. My heart dog Jake lived his last 5 years as an amputee and it barely slowed him down at all.

Glad that Mika has started to pee... a dislocated joint can be quite painful... hope a solution can be found soon. Good that he gets to go home.

it's incredible there is no fear of cars after such a serious accident! that's why dogs are so amazing. they bounce back from so many things with such love and strength. our thoughts are with you for a speedy recovery!

well I'm glad he peed, and I'm glad he can come home, but that x-ray looks like it hurts a lot! I hope you can get it resolved. He is such a good boy!

I'm very happy to hear that Mika peed today. I can empathize, as I have peeing issues myself. In my case, I fell out of an 880' palm tree LONG ago, but 3 yrs ago something in my back deteriorated enough to make me incontinent. I can pee. I just don't know when it's going to happen! It's ok though cause Mom and Dad just let me wear pants and it's all good. Mostly. ;)

I'm also limpy. I hope you get well - at least enough to pee when you want to and to not have any pain, even if you do have a little limp.

Best wishes for a complete recovery!
