Rainy Morning

It's been raining a lot in the morning so Princess Eva couldn't really play in the garden at all. It was a bit boring to be in the playpen for so long and she started complaining...

Never mind, we played 'Flip' (from Katie and Louie the Newfie's blog) a lot until both of us were really tired. Little Eva loves 'Flip' because she can rest comfortably on my laps and she enjoys the belly rub. She's such a spoilt pup!!! I gave her grooming too and it wasn't a success, I guess it's because I don't know how to tell her to stand still and let me do the job probably. I did say 'NO' with firm tone a couple of times but I think she thought I was playing with her. She kept on wriggling and trying to play with me. Help!!! Any suggestions???

About an hour later, I suddenly heard a tiny sharp 'HOWLING' like a little wolf cub from my kitchen. Little Eva was up again. Sadly, we couldn't go out at all as it's still raining outside. At last, we started doing things with sounds. As the playpen is in the kitchen which makes my life so much easier; I just took up the metal utensils and started banging them lightly with each other. Little Eva was a bit shocked in the beginning as the noises definitely didn't sound very soothing but after a few minutes, she started to sniff at them, chew them and even tried to make the noise by pushing the metal bowl and spoons. It was pretty fun to play with her but I was so exhausted after that.

Not much was done today but I think we achieved something called 'puppy socialization'!

Oreo is still a bit squirmy, wormy when he gets brushed. He loved to "attack" the brush when he was a puppy, thinking it was his toy.

When Priscilla gets older, you can try and have someone else feed her small treats while you try and groom her. That should help.

On the treat note, I taught my girls by a training trick we used to teach in puppy class: put a bit of peanut butter or ceam cheese on your wall, sliding glass door or rrefrigerator at about the height of the puppies nose (obiously if the puppy is on a table, pretty high up! But I started brushing my girls on the floor, and then got them comfortable on the table seperately...) They are so busy licking the PB off, that they stand perfectly while being brushed: no playing with the brush, and no biting your hands. You want it to be a positive experience, so syaing "NO" at this stage of the game is like saying "pickles" to her-it has no meaning, and may later hurt your grooming experience with her...
Good luck! Oh, and just make sure you clean the PB off the surface when youre done, as it can quickly turn into cement!!!

Take Care!

Mom just brushes me while I lie on my side - I still complain a little but I lie there and put up with it. It sure takes a long time to brush a Sheltie. I think it's really important to do a little brushing with a puppy - also trim toenails so they get used to that. Mom laid me upside down on her lap to do toenails and I would actually fall asleep while she did it.

Hi, thanks a lot for your ideas. They're really helpful and I'll try them tomorrow. Hope little Eva likes them too.

Thank you for stopping by my blog, Priscilla. You have some beautiful dogs, and I'm going to enjoy stopping by here to watch Princess Eva as she grows. Shelties are one of my favorite dogs!
