- Barking a lot especially at silly things
- Chasing cars, lunging at cars
- Jumping and spinning in circles when they are excited
- Being hand shy
- Slightly wary of strangers
It'd be great to get feedback from you on this :)
Here's another thing we found out about as Eva grew older:
Even though mama Hana isn't here to teach her of her naughty ways, she is EXACTLY like mama Hana in ALL her naughty ways!
- She chases cars (when at home)
- Barks at our neighbours cats
- Chews on pebbles and rocks
Do mama dogs teach their daughters from heaven?
They are starting to look so similar too!

Hi Eva!
Most of my Sheltie friends;
.bark at lots of things
.jump and spin when excited
.hand shy
We all have our own personalities!!
Happy weekend!
Cheers,
Maxx
I haven't owned a Sheltie, but I used to puppy sit every other weekend for a co-worker. So about 6 days a month I had a Sheltie for awhile.
He was definitely hand shy and wary of strangers. He would jump and spin when excited and would bark almost constantly. If someone turned on a TV, he'd bark. If the phone rang, he'd bark. If someone flushed a toilet, he'd bark. Basically just extremely sensitive to all sounds and would respond by alarm barking. I didn't have much experience with how he'd react to other cars, but if I had to guess, I'd assume he was reactive to them, too.
Thanks so much for posting the link to your previous post of the blogger award. I really enjoyed reading them!
I have had Shelties that do all five of the things on your list. There have been five in my family over the years.
Sorry cannot help you on the poll, but I do think all dogs pick up breed trates from their parents just like we do!!

My shelties definitely bark at silly things...dishwasher, me standing on a chair. You know Oreo jumps/spins when excited. Misty sometimes jumps, but never spins.
Misty is slightly wary of strangers, Oreo is terrified. My first sheltie LOVED strangers.
Luckily none of mine have had an issue with cars. Maybe because we live on a busy road, they just seem to blend in with the environment?
I'm not a Sheltie, but I certainly do a lot of Pei things. Some good, some less good, shall we say? Franklin has a lot of the same traits even though we only met when he was over 2 1/2. It sounds like Eva is doing what a Sheltie does.
lotsa licks, Lola
Yep, I do all those things except I don't spin very often (mom is happy about that). When I was a puppy, normal everyday things would surprise me and make me bark. Now I am 3 and just the other day I saw the ceiling fan for the first time and was afraid of it and barked my, "Holy cow, mom, what the heck is that?" bark until she came and told me it was ok!
Have never had a sheltie before, but now that I think about it does seem like many of the ones that we see come through the vet appear to be hand shy.
"Barking a lot especially at silly things" in our home our Sheltie barks at open garage doors (that are nowhere near to be a threat), children playing outside, the chihuahua across the hall, can openers (the manual kind), toast when it pops up from the toaster, garbage disposal, vacuums, me pounding out chicken filets, the mixer, spraying PAM on pans, I am afraid I can go on and on...
"Chasing cars, lunging at cars" -yes!
"Jumping and spinning in circles when they are excited"-we thought this was unique to our dog until you mentioned it!
"Being hand shy"-yes, Shelties are a much more shy breed
"Slightly wary of strangers"-yes which goes with the above. What upsets me is people who say they are dog lovers who are taken aback by a Sheltie's wariness of strangers and decide they don't like our dog or the breed.
forgot to mention that it is so special that Eva is like her Momma...even with the "naughty things", our Sheltie used to eat pebbles too...we have to watch him very closely!
It's so cute how dog breeds have the same characteristics! Maybe she just inherited it from her mommy which is so precious ;)
Sorry we don't know any sheltie friends. The closest we came was mommy had a collie (Keno) before me. I know, totally different, like a doberman and min pin, but he used to bark at silly things and was very wary of strangers, but he was so loyal and protective too!
We get charged by a barking Sheltie all the time on one of our runs. She seems to only go after Kona, so I think she just as dog issues, but does appear to be generally nervous/barky.
I guess I have to say yes to all those things. Except the degree of how much they do those things changes. Guiness doesnt try to get cars but bikes. Barking at the vaccum, taking out the trash and people leaving the house. Miley does the jump one spin when she is excited. Guiness will usually spin just once when outside and get ready to chase something. Lots of times my dogs do the "sheltie shuffle", LoL thats what I call it. Its when you duck or move so someone cant pet you. Doesnt have to be a stranger. I find this funny. Chihuahua's dont do that. Diana
my grandparents had a sheltie and she didn't do any of those things. she was an incredibly poised and well behaved dog. ugh.
dash loves to spin in circles when excited, but no barking, chasing cars, or shyness/wariness of people...
good survey. i like that idea!
Sorry it's taken me so long to get over to take your poll. Just been catching up since I've been home.
Anyway...in my experience, my Shelties like to bark, although to verying degrees depending on the dog.
Mine don't get excited about or chase cars, but they do bark and run back and forth at people on bikes sometimes.
The circling behavior is something Twist (hence the name), does a lot. Especially when we are doing obedience, I can tell he is having trouble focusing on the task at hand when he starts spinning.
The hand shyness and being wary of strangers...That is something I work with mine from the time they come home with me as I do think it can be a Sheltie tendency.
I don't have any that chew on pebbles or rocks, thankfully. I did have an Aussie for years that would pick up rocks when we came home, like she was fetching them.
Thanks for the fun poll. :-)
